Password Protecting Wireless Routers
Did you know that when you set up a wireless router that anyone who lives next door to your can feed off of it and use it. This will not only affect the speed of your internet – but it will leave your computers open to anyone who wants to access the files and important documents. To avoid this you need to password protect the router.
IP Address
The first thing you need to do is find out what your IP address is. This will help you to log on to the router and to reset the password that the factory created for it. Go to the command prompt on your computer. Go to the start menu, go to accessories, and click on command prompt. When you are inside the program type in ‘ipconfig/all’. This will bring up some data and the IP address will be among this. It will look similar to this -123.456.789.1.2.
Accessing Router
Now that you have the IP address you will be able to access the internet and type it into the address bar. This should bring you to the home page of the manufacturer of the router that you have. Use the manual that came with the specific router on the manufacturer password and user name in order to login to the network. The user name will be either ‘password’ or ‘admin’. In some cases they are blank.
Reset Password
When you have logged into the router you will need to go to the administrative functions. Under there you will see a location for security settings. This is where you will change the username and password. Make sure that you choose something that is not too obvious – but that you can easily remember. When you do this make sure that you disable the remote administrative functions.
The router will come with a default network name which will usually be that of the model you bought. Change it to something that you can easily recognize. Try to use something specific but never use your name.
